FMC Abeokuta Denies Pandemonium After Nurse Clash, Assures Patients Of Safety

…Management Says Services Remain Stable

…Internal Memos Reveal Disciplinary Process

…Probe Launched Into Alleged Misconduct

The management of the Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Abeokuta, has denied claims that patient safety was compromised following a reported clash between a nurse and the Head of Department, Nursing Services, insisting that the hospital remains calm and fully operational.

The hospital’s management said the situation was under control and that relevant parties had been engaged, following reports circulating online alleging pandemonium after a confrontation involving Mrs Abosede Fagoyinbo, the HOD Nursing, and a subordinate, Nurse Odusola Oluwakemi.

Reacting to the reports, the HOD Nursing said investigations had commenced and that the centre was not in pandemonium.
“The management is now looking into the matter. Investigation is ongoing and there is no pandemonium in the centre. The issue is under control,” she said.

Internal memos obtained by Medalinks News 24 indicate that disciplinary procedures had already been initiated against the nurse in question prior to the reported altercation.
One of the memos, dated 19 January 2026 and titled Urgent and Confidential Petition to Hospital Management, accused Nurse Odusola O. B., a Chief Nursing Officer, of gross misconduct, threats and actions that allegedly compromised patient safety.

According to the petition from the HOD Nursing, the matter originated from complaints by the Medical Director on 15 January 2026 over nurses allegedly turning down patients at the paediatric and urology clinics, despite not being part of any ongoing strike action.

The memo stated that following inquiries, Nurse Odusola allegedly failed to prepare catheterisation trays for urology patients and claimed there was no water to do so, a claim the Head of Unit reportedly contradicted by confirming the availability of water in the treatment room and toilets.
The HOD Nursing further alleged that the nurse stated she could not “be running around looking for water to treat patients”.

The petition also accused the nurse of displaying arrogance and unprofessional conduct when questioned, ignoring a formal query for 72 hours while colleagues responded within 24 hours, fabricating assault allegations after being queried, and mobilising family members to threaten the HOD Nursing.

It requested urgent investigation into the nurse’s conduct, formal disciplinary proceedings, protection for the HOD Nursing against alleged threats, and a review of patient care protocols.

This internal account contrasts with an online report alleging that pandemonium erupted at the FMC on 15 January 2026 following a physical altercation between the HOD and Nurse Odusola, which reportedly resulted in internal injuries to the latter.

An eyewitness quoted In the report alleged that Mrs Fagoyinbo pushed Nurse Odusola during a heated exchange, while another nurse, who spoke anonymously, described the HOD as domineering and accused her of intimidating staff and compelling nurses to contribute money for departmental celebrations in the past.

According to the report, Nurse Odusola confirmed that an incident occurred and said she was recuperating at home on medical advice.
“I am still recovering at home because of the injuries I sustained during the attack last Thursday,” she said.

Meanwhile, the hospital’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Orisajo, confirmed that management was aware of the incident and that an investigation was underway.
“The Hospital Management is aware of the incident and is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding it. Please be assured that we will keep you informed of any further developments,” he said.

Another memo dated 16 January 2026, a day after the reported incident, and addressed to Nurse Odusola by the HOD Nursing, accused her of gross negligence and unprofessional conduct at the urology clinic on 15 January 2026.

The memo alleged that she failed to prepare solutions for catheter removal, misrepresented the availability of water, left patients unattended due to lack of preparation, and was rude when questioned.
She was directed to respond in writing within 24 hours on why disciplinary action should not be taken and how recurrence would be prevented.

As investigations continue, the FMC Abeokuta management has reiterated its commitment to maintaining patient safety and ensuring a peaceful and professional work environment, urging the public to disregard claims of chaos within the facility.
