The Ogun State Government has confirmed that two men died in the road crash involving world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, and said a full investigation is under way.

The state said the remains of the victims, described as foreign nationals, have been deposited at the Livewell Mortuary in Sagamu, while the injured were taken to hospital.

The fatal crash occurred on Monday at the Makun section of the expressway. A statement issued by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, conveyed the government’s condolences to the families and associates of the deceased.

According to the statement, preliminary findings indicated that the sport utility vehicle in Joshua’s convoy, travelling from Lagos to Sagamu, rammed into a stationary truck.

Akinmade said the impact killed the two victims instantly. “Preliminary reports indicate that two male foreign nationals died on the spot. Their remains have since been deposited at the Livewell Morgue in Sagamu,” he said.

He added that Joshua and his driver were rescued by security personnel attached to the convoy and taken to hospital, where they are receiving medical attention.

The government confirmed that the damaged vehicle has been moved to the Sagamu Motor Traffic Division, while arrangements are ongoing to tow the truck involved to aid investigation.

Describing the incident as deeply unfortunate, the state appealed to motorists to exercise extreme caution, especially during the festive period when highways are busier.

It urged traffic and security agencies to intensify surveillance and enforcement, and prayed for the repose of the dead, the recovery of the injured, and comfort for the bereaved families.
