Super Eagles Secure AFCON 2025 Spot with Game to Spare After Rwanda’s Loss to Libya

The Super Eagles have clinched qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with one match remaining in their qualifying series.

Libya’s 1-0 victory over Rwanda in Kigali on Thursday sealed Nigeria’s place in the upcoming tournament, leaving Rwanda unable to surpass Nigeria’s lead in Group D.

The loss keeps Rwanda five points behind Nigeria, making it impossible for them to overtake the Super Eagles even if they win their final game against Nigeria in Uyo, Akwa Ibom, scheduled for Monday.

Nigeria currently tops the group with 11 points from five matches, followed by Benin Republic with seven points, Rwanda with five, and Libya at the bottom with four points.

Nigeria’s recent 1-1 draw against Benin Republic secured their position as group leaders.

In a tight contest, Benin Republic now needs a win over Libya in their last match or must rely on Nigeria to defeat Rwanda to maintain their qualification hopes.

In addition, Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen continues to shine, with Thursday’s strike elevating his total to 23 goals for the Super Eagles, putting him in joint-second on the Nigerian all-time topscorer list, tied with Segun Odegbami.

The Super Eagles’ qualification reinforces Nigeria’s standing in African football, with fans eagerly anticipating the tournament as the team aims to improve on their runner-up finish in the last AFCON edition.
