The Court of Appeal in Abuja has discharged and acquitted former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, of charges that led to his removal from office in 2019.
Onnoghen’s suspension by then-President Muhammadu Buhari, just weeks before the 2019 presidential election, sparked widespread debate.
Justice Tanko Muhammad was subsequently sworn in as his successor.
President Bola Tinubu, through Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, urged the appellate court to halt further hearings on three appeals filed by Onnoghen, which contested his removal, conviction, and asset seizure.
As part of an October 24 settlement, the court directed the Federal Government to unfreeze Onnoghen’s account with Standard Chartered Bank Nigeria Limited.
