In a historic feat, Nigeria’s representative, Chidimma Adetshina, was crowned the first runner-up at the 73rd Miss Universe pageant held at the Arena CDMX in Mexico City.

This marks the highest-ever finish for a Nigerian contestant in the competition’s history.

Denmark’s Victoria Kjaer Theilvig emerged as the winner, claiming the coveted Miss Universe title for 2024.

Adetshina’s journey to the global stage was marked by resilience and determination. Before representing Nigeria, she faced a tumultuous path.

Born to a Nigerian father in South Africa, the 23-year-old had initially competed in South Africa’s Miss Universe contest but withdrew before the finals following a controversy over her nationality.

“For the safety and well-being of my family and I, I had to step aside,” Adetshina said at the time, addressing the backlash and anti-foreigner sentiment that arose during the competition.

Her withdrawal paved the way for her to participate in Nigeria, where she triumphed as Miss Universe Nigeria, earning her spot on the global stage.

At the Miss Universe finale, Adetshina’s charisma, poise, and powerful storytelling resonated with the judges and audience alike.

Her success has been celebrated as a source of national pride and inspiration for young Nigerians.

Social media erupted with congratulatory messages for Adetshina. Many hailed her accomplishment as a significant milestone for Nigeria in the global pageant scene.

“Chidimma has broken barriers and brought honor to our nation. Her story embodies resilience and grace,” said a statement from the Miss Universe Nigeria organization.

This year’s pageant featured contestants from 90 countries, making Adetshina’s achievement all the more remarkable. Her groundbreaking performance cements her status as a trailblazer in Nigeria’s pageant history.
