The Ogun 1 Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has handed over 3,365 parcels and 75 sacks of Cannabis sativa, weighing 3,103.3kg and 88 cartons of codeine cough syrup, to the state command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA.

The Area Controller, Comptroller Mohammed Shuaibu, during a media briefing held in Abeokuta on the command’s scorecard for February 2025, said that the handover was for proper disposal and further investigation.

Comptroller Shuaibu added that the command intercepted 2,145 bags of smuggled foreign rice, 612 bales of second-hand clothing, 843 pieces of used tyres, and 6,625 litres of Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, which has been auctioned due to its combustible nature.

He said that the total seizures amounted to a duty paid value of N279,595,038, while a revenue of N9,694,072 was generated from baggage assessment and auction sales of PMS.

He said: “Since assuming office at the command, we have implemented various strategies that have resulted in numerous successful seizures, including smuggled foreign rice amounting to 2,145 bags, which is more than four trailer loads; 612 bales of second-hand clothing; 843 pieces of used tyres; and 6,625 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), which has been auctioned due to its combustible nature.

“Others include cannabis sativa in coconut sizes—1,057 parcels; cannabis sativa in bread sizes—159 parcels; cannabis sativa in book sizes—2,074 parcels; and 75 sacks of cannabis sativa. This brings the total marijuana seized to 3,365 parcels and 75 sacks, weighing 3,103.3kg.

“The Duty Paid Value, DPV, of the total seizures amounts to N279,595,038.00. I am also pleased to announce that the command has generated a total of N9,694,072 in revenue from baggage assessment and auction sales of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).

“In addition to the seizures, it is with great responsibility that I inform you of the imminent handover of 3,365 parcels and 75 sacks of cannabis sativa, weighing 3,103.3kg, as well as 88 cartons of codeine cough syrup, which have been seized by Ogun 1 Command operatives. These illicit drugs will be handed over today to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Ogun State Command for proper disposal and further investigation.”

He emphasised the command’s resolve to eradicate illegal trade in dangerous drugs and other contraband, adding that it will continue to focus on ensuring that the borders are secure and national interests are protected.

Receiving the exhibits, the Deputy Commander of Narcotics, Ogun State Command of NDLEA, Alex Chinonye, applauded the Customs operatives for the achievement and the continuous synergy between the agencies.

He told newsmen that NDLEA will obtain a court order and proceed to destroy the illicit drugs publicly.
