Outgoing FMC Director Reflects on 30 Years of Service, Achievements, and Challenges

As Mr. AdeyemI Vaughan prepares to retire after nearly three decades of service at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), he reflects on his journey, achievements, and the challenges he encountered as Director of Administration.

In an exclusive interview with Medialinks News 24, Vaughan shared his insights and offered advice for the future of FMC, while recounting his highs and lows during his time at the institution.

Reflecting on his time at FMC, Vaughan described his journey as dynamic and filled with both triumphs and trials.

“There have been challenges—good, bad, and ugly,” he said. Vaughan’s service began on December 23, 1991, under the Ogun State Government’s Hospital Management, before transferring to FMC on October 2, 1996.

“Over the years, Vaughan climbed the ranks from Senior Assistant Secretary to his current position as Director of Administration. “By the time I retire, I would have spent about three decades in service. I have worked diligently for the growth and development of FMC,” he said.

One of the most difficult moments of Vaughan’s career occurred in 2022, when he faced accusations and was framed for trumped-up charges. “It was the most traumatic period of my entire service,” he recalled.

The allegations, he explained, were unfounded and were eventually dismissed after a thorough investigation by the Federal Ministry of Health. “We were vindicated, reinstated, and paid our four-month salary arrears. Though it was an unmerited experience, it was my worst moment in public service.”

Despite this dark chapter, Vaughan expressed gratitude for the support he received from the FMC leadership during that time. “I am grateful to the leadership of FMC, particularly Dr. Abdulaziz Labo Mahuta, who stood firmly for what was right.”

On the brighter side, Vaughan takes great pride in the impact he has had on the lives of many people.

“One of my greatest joys has been impacting the lives of many people,” he shared, emphasizing that he always maintained an open-door policy for both staff and the public.

“I’ve been able to help several individuals secure jobs through the hospital management without expecting any form of gratification. These moments of service give me deep personal satisfaction, knowing that I’ve been able to make a difference.”

As a hospital administrator, Vaughan acknowledged the challenges of balancing work with family life. “It’s hard to give much time to family, especially when you are responsible for so many people,” he said.

Despite this, he credited his wife for her unwavering support throughout his career. “She has been my pillar, ensuring that the gap isn’t too wide.”

Vaughan takes pride in his role in the infrastructural development of FMC and the promotion of staff, which has served as a motivation for many employees.

“I have led teams to the office of the Head of the Civil Service, ensuring that our staff enjoy a high rate of promotion,” he explained.

As he approaches retirement, Vaughan said he is fulfilled, despite the challenges he faced. “I am very much fulfilled. Despite all the odds and challenges, I feel deeply satisfied with my career.”

Looking to the future, Vaughan advised incoming administrators to continue building on the legacy of excellence established at FMC.

“Collaborating with the Medical Director and other staff is key to ensuring that the hospital functions smoothly,” he noted.

He also emphasized the importance of maintaining positive relationships with the unions, though he expressed frustration with recent delays in releasing promotion letters.

“This delay is a disservice to the hard-working staff who passed the promotion examination.”

In his parting message to the FMC community, Vaughan urged for unity and peace. “This institution is a thoroughfare for many of us; some will leave this year, others next year, but the hospital will remain. Let’s work together as brothers and sisters to keep FMC thriving,” he concluded.

As he bids farewell, Vaughan leaves behind a legacy of commitment, resilience, and service to both FMC and the larger medical community.
