FUNAAB Lecturer Secures Three Prestigious Ph.D. Scholarships, Chooses University of Florida

Mr. Hameed Ologunde, a Lecturer II in the Department of Soil Science and Land Management (SSLM) at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), has reached a significant academic milestone by securing three highly competitive Doctoral scholarships from top global institutions.

The scholarships were awarded by the University of Queensland in Australia, the University of Florida in the United States, and the University of Bayreuth in Germany under the DAAD program.

After careful consideration, Mr. Ologunde opted for the University of Florida, where he is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in Soil, Water, and Ecosystem Sciences on a fully-funded scholarship running from 2024 to 2028.

His research focuses on Soil Health Management for Climate Resilience and Sustainable Food Production, particularly in tropical regions—a crucial field for ensuring food security and mitigating the adverse impacts of climate change.

Reflecting on his journey, Mr. Ologunde expressed immense pride in his decision. “The opportunity to conduct research at the University of Florida in such a vital area of agriculture is a dream come true. I am committed to making meaningful contributions to soil health and sustainable food systems,” he said.

Before embarking on this new academic chapter, Mr. Ologunde laid a strong foundation at FUNAAB, earning both his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Agriculture from the SSLM Department.

His Master’s program was supported by the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) under the African Cassava Agronomy Initiative (ACAI) project.

He later expanded his expertise by obtaining a second Master’s Degree in Soil and Plant Nutrition from the Universidade Federal de Viçosa (UFV) in Brazil through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund/Agricultural Research and Innovation Fellowship for Africa (TETFund/ARIFA).

During this period, he explored topics like Soil Physics, Soil Conservation, and the application of Machine-Learning Techniques in Soil Management.

Mr. Ologunde attributed his achievements to the mentorship and support he received from key figures at FUNAAB, notably the immediate past Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Felix Kolawole Salako, and Prof. Mutiu Busari, Director of the Directorate of Research, Innovations, and Partnerships (DRIP). He described their roles as pivotal in shaping his career.

“I owe much of my success to the guidance of Prof. Salako and Prof. Busari, who believed in my potential and supported my ambitions. Their mentorship, alongside the encouragement of my family, has been a cornerstone of my achievements,” Ologunde stated.

Mr. Ologunde has expressed deep gratitude to the two academic luminaries, acknowledging their influence in his development. He also dedicated his accomplishments to his family for their unwavering support, stating that their encouragement was instrumental in his success.
