The Federal Government has approved an increase in the monthly allowance for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members to ₦77,000, effective July 2024.
The announcement was made on Wednesday by NYSC spokesperson Caroline Embu, who highlighted that this increment aligns with the recently enacted National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024.
The news follows a letter from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, dated September 25, 2024, and signed by Chairman Ekpo Nta.
“Prior to this, the Director General of NYSC, Brigadier General YD Ahmed, had paid an advocacy visit to the Chairman, soliciting a robust welfare package for Corps Members,” Embu stated
. She expressed gratitude towards the Federal Government for this timely gesture, noting it would bring much-needed support to the Corps Members and boost their morale in serving the nation.
Before this increase, Corps Members received a monthly allowance of ₦33,000, which was raised from ₦19,800 in 2020 following the signing of the National Minimum Wage Bill into law.
The decision to elevate the allowance comes shortly after President Bola Tinubu signed the minimum wage bill into law in late July, a pivotal step concluded after extensive discussions involving government authorities, labor unions, and the private sector.
As Corps Members prepare to benefit from this increase, the NYSC is optimistic that this financial uplift will inspire even greater dedication among young Nigerians committed to serving their country..
