The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has announced the arrest of two Chinese nationals, Wang Jiang and Wang Richard, alongside two Nigerians, Donatus Agupusi and Michael Agu, for allegedly attempting to export solid minerals without a permit.
The Enugu Zonal Directorate reported that the arrests followed intelligence from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) on November 3, 2024, which flagged suspicious activities at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu.
In a statement on its X handle, the EFCC disclosed that Jiang was apprehended at the airport’s baggage screening area, where solid minerals, believed to be wrapped in three separate packages, were found in his luggage.
His employer, Donatus Agupusi, who owns Great Wall Construction Limited, was also detained along with the others involved. “Further investigations revealed that none of the suspects had a permit to export the solid minerals to China,” the statement read.
In a related development, two additional suspects, Joshua Ndu and Michael Uchenna, were arrested in Abuja on November 6, 2024, on charges related to money laundering and internet fraud.
Recovered items included luxury cars, electronic devices, and high-end accessories.
The EFCC confirmed that all suspects will be charged to court upon completion of investigations.
