The Enugu State Government has launched a full-scale investigation into the violent activities of the Oriokpa Masquerade groups following the deaths of two individuals in Nsukka earlier this week.
The masqueraders, whose activities have caused chaos and fear in the University Town of Nsukka and surrounding communities, are under intense scrutiny, with the government vowing to bring those responsible to justice.
The state Commissioner for Local Government, Rural Development, and Chieftaincy Affairs, Chief Okey Ogbodo, confirmed the investigation in a statement on Friday.
He emphasized the government’s commitment to maintaining public safety and protecting citizens’ rights.
According to the statement, traditional rulers and Presidents-General of the affected communities—Nguru, Isiakpu, Echara, Nru, Edem-Ezema, Iheagu, Ihe, Owere, and Umuoyo—have been summoned for an urgent meeting with the state authorities to address the situation.
The government aims to hold these communities accountable for the actions of the masquerade groups operating within their territories.
“The affected areas have witnessed pandemonium, bodily harm, and fatalities as a result of the masqueraders’ actions,” Ogbodo said.
“Governor Peter Mbah has directed the Commissioner of Police to immediately commence a full-scale investigation into these incidents with a view to bringing the culprits to justice.”
Governor Mbah’s directive signals the government’s firm stance against any further excesses by the Oriokpa masqueraders or any group involved in violent acts.
The Commissioner also warned that the government would not tolerate further lawlessness, saying, “Our people should never be made to live in fear, as the rights and security of our women, children, youth, and indeed every citizen and resident of Enugu State must be guaranteed at all times.”
The investigation, which has already commenced, will focus on the root causes of the violence and those behind it.
The governor’s administration has pledged that any individuals found culpable will face commensurate legal consequences.
In expressing sympathy for the families of those who lost their lives in the masqueraders’ violence, the government reiterated its determination to uphold the rule of law and ensure public safety across the state.
“Any such excesses by the Oriokpa masqueraders or any group for that matter will be met with sanctions by the government,” the statement concluded.
The meeting with traditional leaders and community heads is scheduled for Friday, September 27, 2024, at the State Secretariat, as the government seeks solutions to prevent future occurrences.
