The Federal Government has dismissed Mr. Ohieku Salami from his position as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo, Benue State.
The announcement was made on Wednesday in Abuja by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, through a statement issued by Folashade Boriowo, Director of Press in the ministry.
Dr. Alausa stated that Salami was removed due to actions deemed “unbecoming of his office and violations of established procedures.”
The minister explained that Salami’s dismissal followed repeated unprofessional actions, including the suspension of the university’s Vice-Chancellor without adhering to prescribed procedures.
“Despite intervention by the Ministry of Education and formal requests to rescind the unlawful suspension, Mr. Salami refused to comply,” Alausa said.
Instead of cooperating, Salami allegedly engaged in “abusive and threatening behavior” towards ministry officials, including the Permanent Secretary.
“Such conduct undermines the ministry’s supervisory role over the university and jeopardises the institution’s stability and governance,” Alausa added.
To restore order, the minister announced plans to appoint a new Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council for the university.
“This is to ensure proper governance and that the university operates in accordance with the principles of law, due process, and accountability,” he said.
The Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo, is expected to continue its operations under the guidance of new leadership as the government works to address governance challenges within the institution.
