Former Real Madrid and Manchester United defender Raphaël Varane has announced his retirement from professional football, just two months after joining Serie A side Como.
Varane, 31, made the decision following a knee injury sustained on his debut for the newly promoted club.
Varane, who had previously played for Manchester United and Real Madrid, took to Instagram to share the news, saying, “They say all good things must come to an end.”
Reflecting on his illustrious career, he wrote, “In my career, I have taken on many challenges, rose to occasion after occasion, almost all of it was supposed to be impossible. I hold myself to the highest standard. I want to go out strong, not just holding on to the game. It takes a big dose of courage to listen to your heart and your instinct.”
Varane’s retirement comes after a decorated career that saw him win three La Liga titles and four UEFA Champions League trophies during his ten years with Real Madrid.
He also played a pivotal role in helping France secure the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
After leaving Manchester United as a free agent in June following an injury-laden 2023-24 season, Varane signed with Como in July. His time with the Italian club, however, was cut short due to injury. Despite this setback, he remains positive about his next chapter.
“I have no regrets,” Varane emphasized. “I have won more than I could have ever dreamed of, but beyond the accolades and trophies, I am proud that I have stuck to my principles of being sincere and have tried to leave everywhere better than I found it.”
He also expressed his excitement for his future with Como, albeit in a different capacity. “A new life begins off the pitch. I will remain with Como. Just without using my boots and shin pads. Something I am looking forward to sharing more about soon.”
