Fear and outrage have gripped residents of Irewole Local Government in Osun State following the gruesome assassination of the recently reinstated council chairman, Remi Abass, by unidentified gunmen.
The attack, which occurred on Monday, took place just as Abass arrived at the local government secretariat accompanied by his supporters. Eyewitnesses say the assailants, who had allegedly been lurking nearby, opened fire on the group, hitting Abass and others.
Abass was immediately rushed to a hospital, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival. His killing has sparked widespread concern over the rising spate of violence and insecurity in the state.
Confirming the tragic incident, the Osun State Police Command announced that an investigation had been launched, and several suspects had already been apprehended in connection with the crime.
Reacting to the killing, the Osun State Government strongly condemned the act, labeling it a “senseless and cowardly” attack. Authorities have vowed to ensure that the perpetrators face the full weight of the law while pledging improved security measures to curb further violence.
The death of Remi Abass has left the Irewole community in mourning, with residents and political associates remembering him as a dedicated leader committed to public service.
