… Says late unionist sacrificed promotions for workers’ welfare
… Recalls struggles involving EFCC, ICPC, DSS and health institutions

Tributes have continued to pour in following the death of veteran unionist and labour activist, Basheer Ayobamiji Obabiyi, with colleagues and associates describing his passing as a major loss to the labour movement and workers’ struggle in Nigeria.
Among those who paid glowing tribute to the deceased was Comrade Tiamiyu Taiwo, who described the late Obabiyi as a rare gem, fearless advocate and dependable voice for workers and the oppressed.
In an emotional tribute made available to Medalinks Media Africa, Taiwo said he received news of Obabiyi’s death with shock and deep grief, noting that the deceased left behind a vacuum that may not be filled anytime soon.
“Your sudden departure has left a big void that might not be filled up anytime soon,” he said.
“You were such a dependable person in the history of unionism in FMCA and beyond. You were an amazing, unbiased and fearless person to work with and have as a mentor.”
Taiwo noted that the late unionist remained committed to workers’ welfare despite personal sacrifices, including repeated denial of promotion because of his activism and insistence on justice.
“You have been denied promotion several times because of fighting for staff welfare. You did all that not for personal gains but for humanity. You were indeed a voice to the voiceless,” he stated.
The labour activist also recalled several struggles and campaigns they jointly undertook across major government institutions and agencies, saying the memories of their engagements remained fresh in his mind.
“EFCC, ICPC, CCB, DSS Headquarters, FCID Headquarters, Federal Ministry of Health and CO struggles are still fresh in my memory,” Taiwo added.
“I will always miss your words of advice and how we discussed FMCA unionism structure.”
Describing Obabiyi as a humble and courageous leader, Taiwo said the late activist dedicated his life to justice, fairness and the advancement of workers’ rights.
He prayed for Allah’s mercy upon the deceased and strength for the family and associates left behind.
“I pray to Allah to accept all your good deeds, overlook your shortcomings and grant you eternal rest. May He comfort your family and everyone you left behind,” he said.
Taiwo further described the late unionist as a leader whose impact would continue to resonate within labour circles long after his death.
“Although you have gone, you live in our hearts forever. Adieu to a leader who served with great humility and courage,” he added.
