The ancient city of Abeokuta came alive at the weekend as global leaders, royal fathers, and eminent Nigerians converged for a two-day Leadership Empowerment International Conference (LEIC) and a three-day medical outreach that brought hope to thousands of residents.
The event, held at the Continental Suites and in Owu Kingdom, showcased a blend of intellectual discourse, humanitarian gestures, and recognitions, with former President Olusegun Obasanjo serving as Guest Lecturer. The conference, themed “Leadership and Followership: The Bonding Factors and The Consequences of Insincerity”, drew participants from over 50 nations.
During the gathering, Dr Kamal S. Umar Sarkin Fullani, CEO of Saver Vision, was honoured with an honorary Doctorate in Ophthalmology and Humanity for his outstanding contributions to eye health. Speaking after receiving the award, he expressed gratitude, saying, “This is a very good programme. Apart from consultation fee, the cost of medication, eye glasses, surgery – you can imagine over 100 people going for the operation. Someone who has been blind for almost 20 years can now see again. I am happy and thankful for all the support I got.”
At the Owu Kingdom outreach, organised by Mamufat Youth Community Development Foundation and Vision Savers Organisation, more than 1,600 residents benefited from free screenings, eyeglasses, and over 100 life-changing cataract surgeries.
The Olowu of Owu Kingdom, Oba (Prof) Saka Matemilola, who hosted the programme, praised the initiative as a powerful example of grassroots healthcare delivery. “Bada Jokosenumi has distinguished himself as a philanthropist with a deep passion for humanity. What we are witnessing here is an example of how collective efforts can transform lives,” he said.
Also present was former President Obasanjo, who reaffirmed his support for the humanitarian initiative, alongside Dr (Mrs) Jolaoluwa Opaleye, the Faderera of Owu Kingdom, who called on privileged Nigerians to emulate the outreach. “Government cannot do it alone; the wealthy must join hands in supporting the less privileged,” she stated.
The outreach was facilitated by Engr. Oluwatoyin Jokosenumi, the Bada of Owu Kingdom, who said the project was designed to restore hope and dignity to the vulnerable. “Many of our people live with avoidable blindness because they cannot afford treatment. This is why we have chosen to provide free screenings, glasses, and surgeries,” he explained.
Dignitaries at the event included Oloori Adijat Bamidele Matemilola, Oloori Aminat Adeleye Matemilola, Chief Adeyemi Aremu Adebayo, Chief Mrs Morohoimubo Obimakinde, Chief Issha Adeyemi, and Chief Akinpelu Brown.
The combined events marked a milestone in blending leadership thought with practical community development, leaving an indelible impact on both the academic and humanitarian fronts.
