A Nigerian-American woman, Victoria Ogunremi, has demonstrated exceptional honesty and integrity by returning $5,700 (approximately ₦8.8 million) she found in a restroom at her workplace in New Jersey, USA.
Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday, Ogunremi revealed that her decision was driven by her Christian faith and concern for the individual who misplaced the money.
“The thought of the pain or trauma it could cause inspired me. Honesty brings peace of mind, and it is the key virtue I cherish,” she said.
Ogunremi immediately located the rightful owner of the cash before reporting the incident to her employer’s management.
Her gesture earned widespread praise from her employer, colleagues, and the individual who lost the money.
“The management was very pleased and proud of me. The owner was incredibly grateful and showered me with praise.
They said it could only have been an act of kindness by someone with the fear of God to do something like this,” Ogunremi recounted.
She credited her upbringing for instilling in her a strong sense of morality and honesty, noting that her late father taught her never to take what does not belong to her.
“A good name is priceless, and peace of mind is golden. No matter how tough your situation is, always return what does not belong to you,” she added.
Ogunremi’s selfless act has been lauded by Nigerians at home and abroad, with many describing it as a shining example of integrity and compassion.
Her story serves as a reminder that doing the right thing often brings rewards far beyond material gain.
