The Ogun State Police Command has detained a 55-year-old man, Olubunmi Johnson, who allegedly set his wife, Kikelomo, on fire during a domestic altercation in their apartment on Fagbuyi Street, Ilogbo, Ota.
The incident reportedly occurred around 8:30 p.m. on Friday, following a confrontation between the couple.
Eyewitnesses say Johnson allegedly doused his wife with petrol before igniting her with a match. Neighbors immediately rushed Kikelomo to the hospital while alerting her relatives, who subsequently informed the police.
Confirming the arrest, Ogun State Police spokesperson Omolola Odutola stated, “The husband doused his wife’s body with petrol and set her on fire with a match. Witnesses to the incident immediately rushed her to the hospital. Upon receiving the report, our detectives quickly took action and arrested the husband, who has since been detained.”
This tragic event follows another high-profile case of domestic violence in October 2024 in Lagos State, where Motunrayo Olaniyi allegedly stabbed his newlywed wife, Olajumoke, to death before setting their apartment ablaze.
The Lagos State Police Command confirmed that Olaniyi’s assault on his 25-year-old wife stemmed from a heated argument between the couple.
The Ogun State Police have intensified their investigation into this latest incident, treating it as a case of attempted murder.
