NUJ Condemns Abduction of Ogun Journalist, Demands Immediate Release and Investigation
The Ogun State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has strongly condemned the abduction of Seun Odunlami, the publisher of Newsjaunt, calling for his immediate release and an investigation into the actions of the Nigeria Police.
In a statement signed by the union’s secretary, Bunmi Adigun, on Thursday, the NUJ described the abduction as an “unacceptable act reminiscent of Gestapo tactics.” The incident reportedly took place in front of Providus Bank in the Oke-Ilewo area of Abeokuta, just meters from the Union’s Secretariat, Iwe Irohin Press Centre.
According to the NUJ, Odunlami was forcibly taken by plain-clothed officers from the Lagos Police Command in the presence of his colleagues and whisked away to an unknown location in an unmarked bus. His phones were switched off immediately after the abduction.
“We demand the immediate and unconditional release of Seun Odunlami,” the statement read. “The police must provide a detailed explanation for the circumstances surrounding his abduction and investigate the actions of the operatives involved. There must also be evidence of any wrongdoing or a prima facie case against him, as this unacceptable commando-like arrest threatens the very fabrics of fundamental rights of journalists in Nigeria.”
The NUJ expressed solidarity with Odunlami’s family and colleagues, who are deeply concerned about his safety. “We stand in solidarity with Seun Odunlami’s family and colleagues, who are understandably distraught and concerned for his safety,” the statement added.
The Union called on relevant authorities to intervene and ensure Odunlami’s safe return while reiterating its commitment to advocating for the protection of journalists’ rights and upholding the rule of law in Nigeria.
