The Ogun State Police Command has announced plans to impound vehicles operating without the required documentation or registration, warning that violators will face legal action.
The State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, disclosed this in a statement signed by the command’s spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, and obtained by MEDALINKS NEWS 24 on Monday in Abeokuta.
According to the statement, the move is part of efforts to enhance public safety and reduce criminal activities in the state. A statistical review of 2024 crime data revealed that unregistered vehicles were frequently used in violent crimes such as kidnapping, armed robbery, and cult-related killings.
The police have launched a public sensitization campaign to address the widespread use of unregistered vehicles, motorcycles, tricycles, and the misuse of dealership plate numbers.
“The grace period for compliance has been announced, during which drivers are expected to update their papers. After this sensitization period, the police will adopt a zero-tolerance approach toward violators,” the statement read.
Commissioner Ogunlowo also lamented the prevalence of offenses such as operating without valid documents, driving unregistered vehicles, using expired dealership licenses, and applying illegal tints to cars.
“Non-compliance will attract severe consequences. Vehicles operating without proper registration or documents will be impounded, and offenders will be prosecuted,” Ogunlowo warned.
He urged residents to cooperate with law enforcement and adhere to traffic regulations to foster a secure environment in the state.
