The Oyo State High Court in Ibadan has denied bail applications for Naomi Silekunola, the estranged wife of the Ooni of Ife, and Abdullahi Fasasi, Principal of Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan.
Justice Olawoyin, presiding at Court 8, Ring Road, ruled against their release during proceedings on Tuesday. The court deferred the bail ruling for Oriyomi Hamzat, proprietor of Agidigbo FM, until next week.
The defendants are facing charges related to a tragic stampede during a children’s festive party held in December 2024 at Islamic High School, Bashorun, which claimed the lives of at least 35 children.
Prosecution Led by Oyo Attorney General
The case saw heavy security deployment, with the prosecution led by Oyo State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Prof. Oyelowo Oyewo, SAN. Sources noted that all lawyers from the Oyo Ministry of Justice were present to argue against bail.
A court source revealed, “The Attorney General pleaded that the state be granted more time to complete its investigations, which influenced the decision to deny Naomi and the school principal bail.”
Naomi’s case has been adjourned to next week for further proceedings.
Governor Makinde Calls for Accountability
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has emphasized that all parties involved in the incident must face trial, stressing that the law should take its course regardless of the defendants’ status.
However, Makinde clarified he is not opposed to granting bail where deemed appropriate, urging fairness in the judicial process.
Critics have pointed out discrepancies in handling similar incidents in other states, such as Abuja and Anambra, where prosecutions did not follow.
