Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has rased concerns over threats to his life following his criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s administration in his New Year message.
Obi’s allegation comes after a remark by Felix Morka, the national spokesperson of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who stated during an interview that “Peter Obi has crossed the line so many times and has it coming to him whatever he gets.”
Speaking at a New Year press conference on Thursday, the former Anambra State governor lamented Nigeria’s deteriorating political, economic, and security situation. He highlighted the worsening poverty levels and declining economic indicators, asserting that the country’s fortunes are in reverse.
“Our national challenges are visibly worsening. Nigeria remains one of the poverty capitals of the world, with over 100 million people living in extreme poverty and more than 150 million in multidimensional poverty,” Obi said.
He added that Nigeria’s GDP has dropped significantly, from $574 billion and a per capita income of $3,500 in 2014 to approximately $200 billion and $1,000, respectively.
Reacting to Morka’s statement, Obi expressed concerns over threats to his life, family, and associates. In a post on his X handle on Monday, he asked if he had “really crossed the line” and called for clarification.
“If I have truly crossed the line, I invite anyone to point it out, as I remain committed to upholding decorum,” he wrote. “However, I will not be silenced in my resolve to speak truthfully, especially as our nation continues to drift toward undemocratic practices.”
Obi further accused the current administration of fostering an authoritarian and repressive regime, suppressing freedom of expression. He called for collective efforts to create a freer society for future generations.
Morka is yet to issue a response to Obi’s claims.
