“Withdraw Manipulative Award to FMC Idi-Aba”: CDHR Demands Probe of Health Minister, Selectors

The Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) has called for the immediate withdrawal of the “Best Customer Friendly and Environmentally Clean Hospital” award recently granted to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Idi-Aba, Abeokuta.
The group described the accolade as “manipulative” and inconsistent with the facility’s track record, demanding a full probe into the selection process and those involved.
The award, announced in a congratulatory letter dated November 12, 2024, was signed by the Coordinating Minister for Health and Social Welfare, Professor Ali Pate.
In the letter addressed to the hospital’s Medical Director, Professor Adewale Musa-Olomu, the Minister praised FMC Idi-Aba for its “distinguished performance in providing effective healthcare services.”
However, the CDHR expressed shock and disappointment, questioning the credibility of the award and alleging possible manipulation.
Comrade ‘Yinka Folarin, the group’s National Vice President, highlighted the glaring mismatch between the award’s claims and the realities on the ground.
“It is suspicious and unjustifiable that FMC Idi-Aba, a facility plagued with numerous complaints of negligence, dereliction of duty, and an unfriendly environment, could be deemed ‘Best Customer Friendly,'” Folarin stated in a release dated November 15, 2024.
Folarin emphasized the widespread dissatisfaction among patients and relatives over the hospital’s alleged failure to deliver quality and timely clinical services.
“This award is an affront to the mission of providing effective healthcare. We demand its immediate withdrawal and a thorough investigation of all involved, including the Minister, who appears complicit in this shameful act,” he added.
The CDHR further urged the relevant authorities to investigate whether the selection process was influenced by bias or undue interference, vowing to continue advocating for accountability in the healthcare system.
As of press time, neither the Federal Medical Centre nor the Minister of Health had issued a response to the CDHR’s allegations.
